Cadillac Movie of the Week

The idea here is to hire the DVD, grab your favorite movie snacks and drinks, dim the lights, and sit back for a great night with a terrific Cadillac movie. *Scroll down the page for pics and each movie's pictures start with the film's promotional poster.

No.1 - 'Red Rock West'. Made in 1993 and starring Nicolas Cage & Dennis Hopper it's a gem; part western, part thriller, a great story, and the Caddy is a '67 coupe deVille. Watch for the scene where Nicolas Cage pulls into a remote Texas service station with an empty tank and just $5 in his wallet. And check out the clothes worn by Dennis Hopper, sheesh, where can I get a wardrobe like that!

No.2 - 'Tin Men'. A film filled with sharp dressed, smooth talking 'aluminum siding' salesmen who know every con trick in the book to get you to sign on the dotted line. And what car is the only car a successful saleman can drive - why the very latest Cadillac of course. Rows and rows of more fins than you'd see at the Helsinki Christmas sales.
Set in 1963 Baltimore and made in 1987, it stars Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito; watch out for Danny's gorgeous primrose yellow '61 and his classic line "You bolted...you bolted..."

No.3 - 'My Cousin Vinny'. Another great comedy that stars a Series 62 1962 Caddy convertible. Oh, and Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei. Made in 1992 and set south of the Mason-Dixon line, the courtroom scenes with lawyer of one week Pesci crossing swords with crusty Judge Fred Gwynn (in his last role before he died) are priceless. Funny how a 'yute' means one thing in Brooklyn, something else in Australia, and makes no sense at all down south. Gotta love Joe and Marisa sleeping in their Caddy one night too. I've tried it. It isn't comfy (although it might be with Marisa!)

No.4 - 'Hud'. After two comedies here's a complete change. Made in 1963 this is an older movie that is also in black and white. Winning 3 Academy Awards, with several other nominations, the movie is set on a Texas cattle ranch and shows old cowboys moving into a new age. Paul Newman is fantastic and for most of the movie co-stars with his gorgeous 1958 Cadillac convertible. Today they try to make 'period' movies using old props; this film is priceless for its use of fifties props, clothes and cars that were all in regular use at the time. Much like Paul's Caddy, this film is a true classic.

No.5 - 'Beyond the Sea'. Set in the 1950s & 60s with all the era's cars, clothes, and rock n'roll how could you not love this 2004 film about fabulous Bobby Darin? Well, the critics hated it - but what do they know as Bobby's wife (Sandra Dee), his son Dodd and manager Steve Blauner, all praised Kevin Spacey's movie in which the latter produced, directed, starred and even sang. At one stage in the film Bobby owns a 1961 series 62 Cadillac while at the same time his wife Sandra Dee owns a '64 coupe deVille. How scary is that!

No.6 - 'Lost Junction'. A cast you may not know, no big stars, but what can you say about breaking down in the steamy South and being rescued by a gorgeous girl driving a '59 Caddy convertible. And then going on a road trip with her across the South to New Orleans. Oh Lord! It's just a shame her dead husband is in the trunk! Keep an eye out for the car chase and watch how the stunning '59 suddenly changes into a badly disguised 'beater'. (Made in 2003)

No.7 - 'Thunderbolt & Lightfoot' 1974 and staring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges. Film starts with a '59 with open headers, ends with a brand new '73 Eldo convertible rolling out of the showroom, and is sprinkled with Caddies throughout. A great story with great Western countryside and some great supporting actors. Watch out for Gary Busey (The Buddy Holly Story) as 'the lawn guy', Gary was 30 when he made this movie, his son Jake was the guy in the wheelchair in Lost Junction; Jake was 31 in that film. The two of them could be twins.

No.8 - 'Leningrad Cowboys Go America' When the Blues Brothers was released it didn't initialy do well because mainstream folks just didn't get it. Now of course the BB is a cult classic. This 1989 Finnish movie (yes, a Cadillac film made by a Fin!), is a similar masterpiece; a masterpiece 'normal' people just won't get. It's about a bunch of Russian musicians going to America, driving across the US in a Cadillac, and playing rock n'roll gigs at every seedy run down joint on the way. All the clubs are for real, all the owners and patrons played themselves. Fabulous. Stars 2 Caddy limos, a 1975, then a '64.

No.9 - 'Finding Graceland' A guy driving a beat up '59 out in the US boondocks picks up hitchhiker Harvey Keitel - who really thinks he's Elvis. He don't look a bit like Elvis...but it has been a long time...? The scene were 'Elvis' convinces the highway cop he is The King is priceless, as is Bridget Fonda as a Marilyn impersonator. And if you own a Caddy of this vintage, the scene over Keitel's shoulder as he floors the '59 and the speedo needle does a Mexican wave will be very familiar. 1998.
