Record Breaking Cadillac
The Most Well Travelled Caddy in Australia!
(Click on the small black triangle and listen to this great Aussie song as you read about all the places Lucy has been.)
I hereby officially throw down the gauntlet that Lucy is the most well travelled Cadillac in Australia. Having made that bold statement I’d best explain ”most well travelled”. Yes, some hire car Cadillacs may have a far greater mileage than Lucy’s 220,000 kilometer total, BUT, my claim is that no other Cadillac in all of Australia has travelled, under her own steam and for in excess of 100,000 kilometers, to such widely diverse locations as has ever faithful reliable old Lucy. Have a look at where she's been before you suggest you know a challenger.
Since I've owned her I've driven Lucy in excess of 100,000 kilometres (with the photographs to prove it being shown elsewhere on this site) to the following geographical extremes:-
as far east as you can drive a car, Cape Byron NSW.
as far south as possible on the mainland, Wilson Promontory VIC.
as far south as possible in all Australia, Cockle Creek TAS.
to the most southerly petrol bowser in Australia, Southport TAS.
as far north as possible on bitumen, Lee Point (north of Darwin) NT.
to the dead centre of Australia, Kulgera NT.
to the lowest point in Australia, Lake Eyre SA.
to the lowest town in Australia, Marree SA.
to the highest point in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko NSW.
to the highest town in Australia, Cabramurra NSW.
to the highest point a car can go in TAS - Mt Wellington.
to the coldest town in Australia, Charlotte Pass, NSW.
to the halfway point between Sydney and Perth, Kimba SA.
to the flattest place on the entire planet, Hay NSW.
to the highest point between Darwin & Adelaide, north of Alice Springs NT.
inside the oldest cave formation in the world, the Jenolan Caves NSW.
to the coldest town in Queensland, Stanthorpe. (It was -6 when we camped overnight here and I love the irony of going to the coldest place in sunny Queensland!)
to the most northerly pub on the Murray River, Overland Corner SA. (This was before there was a bitumen road to get there; now anyone can do it. It's also relevant the Murray is the 3rd longest river on the planet.)
to the (claimed/alleged) most central pub in Australia, Ti-Tree NT.
Plus; Lucy's travelled on parts of both the Birdsville and Strezleki Tracks and another time was turned back from an attempt to reach Cameron Corner (the meeing point of QLD/NSW & SA) due to rain, bad roads and a bum that drags way too low.
She's also been to Ayers Rock, the Devil's Marbels, Wave Rock (Pildappa SA) Sydney Harbor Bridge & Opera House, lapped the Bathurst Mt Panorama race track (done this on two separate trips)...the list goes on...
Plus she's visited the capital cities of most States, including Brisbane (QLD), Sydney (NSW), Melbourne (VIC), Canberra (ACT), Darwin (NT) and Hobart (TAS), as well as our own Adelaide (SA) of course.
Plus she's travelled the country seeking out in excess of 125 Big Things, including Australia's Biggest Big Thing (the Big Rocking Horse) and the World's Biggest Moving Big Thing (the Big Rolling Pin).
Some of the places remaining on Lucy's 'bucket list' include; the most westly and northly points, Australia's wettest town (Tully QLD - for the Big Boot), the hottest town (Marble Bar WA - where it was over 100 degrees for a staggering 161 consecutive days), the driest town (Mulka Bore SA), the capital of WA, Perth - I'm working on all of these destinations. I'm still thinking about how the Hell I'm going to get the long n'low old girl to the tip of Cape York though, with this fantastic adventure planned as a follow on from the 2012 Toowoomba Cadillac LaSalle Nationals. Stay tuned!
News Flash!...Stop the pressess!...come March 2011 Lucy's latest record was to be her being the first Cadillac to attend the Land Speed Salt Flat Racing at Lake Gairdner. Well, that was the plan but the event was rained out so we went to the southern tip of Tassie instead! Yep, another one bites the dust.
